Planning For Divorce

By December 3, 2014July 21st, 2023Divorce

I am often asked what it is people should do if they are thinking about getting divorced. Should they get a job if they are unemployed? Should they set up accounts in their own name? Should they be saving money? Thinking about a divorce is worrisome, and planning for that possibility if you are in an unhappy marriage is a good idea; but the answers to these questions are not one-size-fits-all, so I advise people to speak to an attorney.

I like to call these first meetings pre-divorce a “planning” meeting because what you are looking to do is plan for your future. Life during and after divorce is uncertain, and having a meeting with an attorney can assist you in thinking about your long-term future post-divorce, and in looking at what you will need and may expect in the short term, during your divorce.

These meetings do not mean you are getting divorced, nor do they mean you are scheming. What they mean is that you are assessing where you are in your life right now in terms of employment, custody and financial issues, and determining what you need to consider for each of those issues if a divorce is in your future. Just as you would not go on a long road trip without a map and some plans for accommodations along the way, you should not jump head-first into a life-changing decision like divorce without getting some guidance first. For questions about divorce planning, the family law attorneys at Paule, Camazine & Blumenthal can help.
